RICHMOND HEIGHTS, Ohio — One man is in custody after a standoff involving SWAT in Richmond Heights.
Richmond Heights Police Chief Calvin Williams told 3News' Bri Buckley that the incident began as a call for a welfare check just after 5 p.m. on Tuesday. The situation escalated into a standoff with a SWAT team at the scene.
Williams says that officers were communicating with a man in the house.
“We responded and we found strong evidence there was an individual who had an altered mental state and was possibly armed. We also suspect that there was a felonious assault committed inside, so we called forth our special teams and we secured the area and the teams did what they did to peacefully and safely resolve the situation," Sgt. James McVey of the Richmond Heights Police Department told Buckley after the incident.
McVey added that one person "appeared to have been shot."
Police in Richmond Heights had advised everyone to avoid the area of Stevenson Street due to an "ongoing police investigation" earlier on Tuesday evening, adding that those who reside on Stevenson Street were told to remain indoors and shelter in place.
