RICHMOND HEIGHTS, Ohio — There's a familiar face leading the Richmond Heights Police Department.
"Congratulations are in order for our new Chief of Police, Calvin Williams, who was sworn in today!" the Richmond Heights Police Department posted Tuesday on Facebook. "Let’s give him a warm Richmond Heights welcome on this cold and snowy day!"
Recognize that name?
Williams had served as Cleveland Police Chief from 2014 until he stepped down in January of 2022. He previously said he made his decision to leave the role once Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson announced that he would not run for another term, although then Mayor-elect Justin M. Bibb had also pledged to fire him.
"If you're out the door, then I'm out the door with you because I don't think I can work for anyone else to be honest," Williams said he told Jackson at the time.
Williams began his career with the Cleveland Division of Police in 1986.
"I love this city," Williams said of Cleveland prior to his departure from the police department. "I love the people in it. I hope I've done you proud. I hope I've done you justice. The men and women in this division that go out and work hard every day love this city also. They want only the best for this city and we want your support."
You can watch our extended interview with Williams from November 2021 in the video below, which came just a few months before he left the Cleveland Police Department.
Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb has since appointed Wayne Drummond to serve as the new chief of police.
