CLEVELAND — An ongoing project to stabilize the banks of the Cuyahoga River in Cuyahoga Valley National Park is moving on to its next site.

Work is set to be completed north of the Station Road Bridge Trailhead in Brecksville, the National Park Service announced Friday. Crews will soon move on to the next site, south of the bridge.

The project is aimed at stabilizing the riverbanks along eight sites within the 33,000-acre park where erosion has begun to imperil the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail and the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad train tracks. Work began in 2022 and is expected to wrap up sometime in 2025.

With work north of the bridge finishing up, the Towpath Trail heading north from Station Road Bridge will be open starting next Wednesday. The NPS says visitors using the trail should expect delays while contractors move equipment and materials.

To facilitate work at the project's next site, about half a mile of the Towpath Trail south of Station Road will be closed on weekdays, starting next Wednesday and lasting until August 2. The trail will be open on weekends, from 6 p.m. on Fridays until 5 a.m. on Mondays, when crews will not be working. There is no detour for when the trail is closed on weekdays.

"The closure is necessary for public safety while the contractor completes bank stabilization at the site where Chippewa Creek enters the Cuyahoga River," the NPS said.

The riverbank stabilization project is federally funded through the Great American Outdoors Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
