SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio — A Shaker Heights High School student has been arrested after classes were dismissed early on Wednesday.
Shaker Heights Police confirmed to 3News on Thursday that a student, who allegedly brought an unloaded handgun to school, has been taken into custody.
After being made aware of a student with an unloaded handgun, administrators investigated and secured the weapon with the help of the Shaker Heights Police Department.
Following the investigation, the school decided to resume classes on Thursday.
Shaker Heights Schools officials say that no staff members or students were harmed during the incident and there was no specific threat to the school.
Here is what the school district is doing on Thursday following the incident:
- The student involved in this situation will not be in attendance at school
- The District has arranged for additional security staff and police presence in and around the High School during the school day
- The District remains in close contact with the Shaker Heights Police Department
- Security monitors continue to walk the hallways throughout the school day
- The High School administrative staff will continue to work closely with the security team and provide daily briefings about rumors and potential threats
- Counselors will be available for students or staff who need assistance during the day
School officials encourage students and staff members to report anything inappropriate, suspicious or dangerous.
"As we experienced today, students and staff members reporting when they see something inappropriate, suspicious or dangerous is a vital aspect of our community, one that helps keep us all safe," Shaker Heights High School officials said in an email.
