CLEVELAND — The suspect in the fatal shooting of Euclid police officer Jacob Derbin was found dead in a Shaker Heights residence after an hours-long standoff with law enforcement officials.
WKYC cameras observed the scene on Van Aken Boulevard east of Lee Road just after 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
At around 2:10 p.m., 3News observed SWAT officers putting on helmets and shields and entering the apartment complex.
U.S. Marshals, as well as a swath of officers from multiple law enforcement agencies across Northeast Ohio assisted Shaker Heights police in the operation.
In a Sunday evening press conference, Euclid police along with U.S. Marshals confirmed that the suspect -- identified as 24-year-old Deshawn Anthony Vaughn -- was found dead inside of a residence at the apartment complex. It is not known at this time how Vaughn was killed.
Members of the 3News team on the scene of the standoff heard multiple gunshots in the area before the standoff ended.
In a the press conference, Euclid police confirmed a number of details regarding the Saturday night shooting.
Officer responded to a domestic disturbance call at approximately 9:56 p.m. on the 300 block of East 211th Street. The woman frantically told police that Vaughn threatened both her and his child with violence. She told police that he had left the property and may be nearby.
When officers investigated the backyard of the residence, Vaughn ambushed the officers with gunfire, striking Officer Derbin. Officers returned fire at Vaughn, who was able to flee the scene.
Officer Derbin was transferred to University Hospitals where he died from his injuries.
No other officers were injured.
The Euclid Police Department released the following statement:
"Officer Derbin was proudly sworn in to the Euclid Police Department on July 24th, 2023. During his brief time with the department, he served the residents and business owners of Euclid, as well as his fellow Officers with dedication, honor, and professionalism. His kind heart and enormous smile were infectious. The world was a better place with him in it and he will be desperately missed by all who knew him.
"Thank you to our law enforcement partners who are assisting us in our time of need. We also want to thank the public for their enormous outpouring of compassion and support."
