EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio — An emergency shelter has been established by the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army to help more than 100 people who were displaced after a fire at the Terrace Towers Apartments in East Cleveland on Monday.
3News has learned that 52 people stayed at the shelter Monday night. Officials say the apartment building, which is located at 15600 Terrace Road, is uninhabitable.
An official cause of the fire has not been given.
"We are heartbroken for all of these families," stated Captain Chaka Watch, Commanding Corps Officer, the Salvation Army in East Cleveland Corps Community Center. "Last evening, over 50 families stayed at our Corps feeling anxious and hopeless. The Salvation Army will be working tirelessly with these families and individuals to restore their faith and hope."
The Salvation Army says they are offering showers, clothing vouchers, daily meals and coffee to those impacted by the fire.
"In addition to these services, case managers will be available to help individuals and families identify new support and housing alternatives to begin new journeys," the organization said. "Finally, the Salvation Army will offer spiritual and emotional to help comfort those impacted by the fire."
Those impacted by the fire -- or others in need of assistance in East Cleveland -- are asked to call the Salvation Army at 216-249-4334.
"Our goal at the Salvation Army is to help uplift any individual or family that enters our doors. We will do this for these residents impacted by the Terrace Towers fires. These residents are our community, and we want to help them get back on their feet," Captain Chaka said.
Some pastors are also helping to place people in hotel rooms. Anybody impacted by the fire who would like their assistance can e-mail theomegabaptistchurch@gmail.com.
