SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio — A water main break caused severe flooding across multiple streets in Shaker Heights Monday afternoon and evening.
The break occurred in the area of Ashby Road and Van Aken Boulevard. Police say Van Aken was closed in both directions between South Woodland and Onaway Roads, but has since been reopened.
A boil advisory was put in place in response to the water main break, but has since been lifted a day earlier that expected. The following cities were impacted:
- Lyndhurst
- South Euclid
- University Heights
- Shaker Heights
- Highland Hills
- Warrensville Heights
- North Randall
- A portion of the east side of Cleveland
A map showing the exact areas can be found HERE.
Due to the flooding, the Greater Cleveland RTA had shut down all Blue Line trains between Shaker Square and the Warrensville-Van Aken station. The service has since been restored.
Crews from the Shaker Heights Public Works Department as well as the Cleveland Division of Water were on scene, with the streets looking more like a flowing river as the water poured out as if from a geyser. Julie Henry decided to seize the moment, taking her inflatable pool raft out on the water.
"The water's actually really warm," she said. "Feels really good."
Meanwhile, some residents are stranded by the flooding.
"The water was coming so fast, we ended up turning into a neighbor's driveway," Elicia Keebler Gibbon told 3News.
