Suspected impaired driver crashes into parked security vehicle in a construction zone, sends off-duty police officer to the hospital

Officials tell 3News that the Wellington police officer who was hit is expected to recover.

A Wellington police officer is in the hospital today after being hit while sitting in a parked car in Cleveland early Sunday morning. 

According to Sgt. Ray Santiago with the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP), around 1:55 a.m. Sunday, an unnamed Wellington police officer was working security detail for a police-contracted security company on Interstate 90 Eastbound near Interstate 490.

While parked in a security vehicle inside the construction zone, the vehicle what struck by a suspected drunk driver from behind. 

OSHP troopers responded to the scene to provide backup and the Wellington officer was sent to MetroHealth in Cleveland with non-life-threatening injuries. 

Officials tell 3News that the driver was also taken to MetroHealth with non-life-threatening injuries and has been cited with OVI.
