A fire at a senior living community in Euclid resulted in one death and two others needing medical attention on Sunday night.
The Euclid Fire Department responded to Indian Hills Senior Community, located in the 1500 block of East 193rd Street, just after 10:30 p.m. for reports of a fire inside an apartment.
At the scene, officials observed smoke in the area and were meet with residents outside reporting that the fire was on the second floor.
Once inside, crews encountered heavy smoke and the fire was found inside apartment 225. According to fire officials, wind contributed to heavy smoke spread throughout all six floors of the building.
While searching the building, to ensure occupant safety and health, a 57-year-old woman was found dead in a hallway nearly two hundred feet from the apartment where the fire originated. The woman had smoke and soot stains around her mouth and nose. She was transported to Euclid hospital. Her identity has not yet been released.
Additionally, two other occupants suffered smoke inhalation. A 72-year-old man and a 93-year-old woman were both treated at the scene with oxygen and refused transport to the hospital.
Officials believe the cause of the fire may have been unattended cooking. Damages to the building and contents are estimated at $425,000. The building has an approximate value of $1.75 million.
The Red Cross of Northern Ohio responded to the scene to offer residents shelter and clothing.
