GEAUGA COUNTY, Ohio — Fore!
The Open may be the talk of sports this weekend, but did you know there is a sport that combines golf and frisbees? It’s called disc golf, and there’s a vast community of players here in northeast Ohio.
This weekend, Friends of Punderson hosted their annual disc golf tournament at Punderson State Park in Newbury Township.
In its tenth year, the event brought more than 70 disc golf lovers to the wooded Park in Geauga county. The two-day tournament helps to raise money for equipment and park's maintenance. The disc golf course is currently ranked second in the state.
Disc golf was invented in the early 1990s, but gained new popularity during the pandemic, and it's still an activity that people continue to enjoy.
Just like traditional golf, disc golf is played with the same rules just without any balls and clubs.
"One throw (stroke) is counted each time the disc is thrown and when a penalty is incurred. The goal is to play each hole in the fewest strokes possible. The player with the lowest total strokes for the entire course wins. The hole is completed when the disc comes to rest in a disc golf basket," according to discgolf.com.
According to the Friends of Punderson organization, there is a playing opportunity for anyone interested in the sport; they host everyone from beginners with little to no experience to professionals with upwards of 10 years of experience playing.
The group is also inclusive. The group's officials say they appreciate and welcome all people of different backgrounds and walks of life.
