Geauga County 3-vehicle crash: 2 critically injured including 2-year-old child

Nine people overall were hurt in the Tuesday afternoon incident in Middlefield.

MIDDLEFIELD, Ohio — Three vehicles were involved in a serious crash that occurred on State Route 528 near mile post 8 Tuesday afternoon in Geauga County.

At approximately 2:46 p.m., a white Dodge Caravan was driving southbound on Route 528 attempting to make a left turn into a private drive in Middlefield. Officials say a white Hino 155 truck was traveling southbound on the same road and struck the Dodge in the rear of the vehicle. After impact the Dodge went left of the center line and was struck head-on by a black Honda CRV that was traveling northbound on 528.

The Dodge Caravan had four total passengers in the vehicle, including two children that were ages 2 and 5. The 2-year-old was ejected from the vehicle and life-flighted from the scene by University Hospitals and taken to UH Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland. The toddler is currently in critical condition.

The driver and remaining two passengers were transported to UH Geauga by local EMS crews. The driver of the Honda CRV was flown from the scene by UH and taken to Main Campus, where she is also listed in critical condition. The remaining two passengers were taken to UH Geauga by EMS.

The truck had one occupant at the time of the incident. The driver was transported to UH Geauga by ambulance.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors in the crash. The incident remains under investigation.
