CLEVELAND — It's a pour that has been happening here at this spot for 30 years, and now, Market Avenue Wine Bar in Ohio City has a new owner
"Everybody thinks I'm crazy," she says.
"Crazy smart" is what one would say when speaking to Elizabeth Marengo. The 42-year-old has a master's degree in organizational development, and she's had an eye on this place ever since she was in college.
"I would study here, and it always felt like home," Marengo told 3News.
So when the previous owner wanted to sell, she jumped at the chance to buy the bar along with the coffee shop next door. Marengo is now the only Latina woman in Cleveland to own a wine bar and describes the restaurant as "iconic," from the 1950s-style Burgundy Room to the soft, romantic lighting.
"It's a place where — you know how we are: We like to have all of our family and friends over," she said of the Burgundy Room's vibe. "We like to celebrate life."
Why change it? Well, she won't.
"(I'll) maybe add my touch, add a little Latino touch where it needs to be. Same on the coffee shop side," she explained. "Maybe I'll continue to build off the wine selection."
Wine from all over the world, that you can't find at a supermarket.
Marengo knows this is a tough business, and she's in a world where men have built up this part of Ohio City. But in a man's world, this woman — a Latina woman — is determined to make her mark, celebrate women, and tip the glass of success over her way.
"It's been a challenge, but one that I'm up for, and I think any Latina or Latino in general, be open to the resources and the connection opportunities available to you," Marengo said. "Honestly, if I didn't have that gumption to do it, I probably would not be sitting here right now."
Market Avenue Wine Bar will be marking its 30th anniversary on Oct. 5, in a celebration Marengo says will be "epic."
