Upon learning of the students in possession of the firearms, police took the students into custody inside a classroom at about 9 a.m.

Police say that "several" loaded and unloaded firearms were found in the student's possession.

The school was placed on a brief lockdown while additional police officers searched the entirety of the buildings. Despite officials finding no other firearms during their search, the school made the decision to cancel afternoon classes.

Both of the students were taken to the Willoughby Police Department and will be criminally charged with inducing panic and other criminal charges.

The Willoughby-Eastlake School Board will also be conducting a review of the incident for school-related discipline.

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Willoughby Police Department, the NCI Willoughby staff, our students, and the community for their quick and collaborative efforts to guarantee the safety of everyone. Willoughby-Eastlake City Schools will continue to prioritize student and staff safety in all circumstances," said Willoughby-Eastlake Interim Superintendent Charles Murphy in a statement.
