PAINESVILLE, Ohio — A man is in custody following an early morning SWAT situation in Lake County.
The Lake County Sheriff's Office says that they responded to a call of shots fired by a man in the area of Oakwood Boulevard and Shady Lane in Painesville Township on Thursday. The individual who reported the dispute told police officials that the man shot at him several times and went inside a trailer after firing his gun.
Upon arriving at the scene, deputies attempted to contact the suspect, but he refused to communicate. The Lake County Sheriff's Office eventually evacuated a number of nearby residents and activated the Lake County SWAT team at around 3:15 a.m.
"After the members of the unit were in position, negotiators began multiple attempts to make contact with the male. Failing to gain any response, SWAT units used an armored vehicle to approach the trailer and break the window to make visual contact with the suspect. The suspect began speaking with negotiators and soon surrendered peacefully," said Lake County Sheriff Frank Leonbruno in a press release.
58-year-old Gary Haynes was taken into custody and is currently being held at the Lake County Jail in Painesville.
Any residents near Oakwood Boulevard and Shady Lane in Painesville Township who have gunfire damage are asked to report it to the Lake County Sheriff's Office.
