6 weeks after Willowick parking garage collapse, little has changed for Shoregate Towers residents

Some tenants say they still can't access their damaged vehicles, and lawsuits against the apartment complex's owner are piling up.

WILLOWICK, Ohio — Large pieces of mangled concrete still remain at the on top of the garage at Shoregate Towers in Willowick. Rebar and beams are exposed, like nothing has been done since the Aug. 23 collapse.

"I'm so involved in this that it is just consuming my life," resident Orion Wortman said.

For Wortman, his life has been crushed, just like his car that looks like an accordion.

"I have to do this," he noted, "because Shoregate Towers isn't taking care of their stuff."

"Stuff" now in the hands of Willowick City Council and the town's mayor, Michael Vanni. They have filed multiple lawsuits against Shoregate Towers owner Lemma Getachew, with several complaints against them.

"Even before the collapse of the garage, [we] have already been on these people," Ward 1 Councilman Tom Loncala said at a recent meeting.

According to legislators, Shoregate Towers is not in compliance with city law. While residents are relieved the city is helping, they are angry Getachew's alleged mismanagement of the property.

"I am tired of hearing all sorts of reasons of why he isn't being held accountable," one tenant told Council.

The parking for senior citizens is, many times, unattainable. Because there is no garage, they tell 3News it's a free for all.

Slowly, residents are receiving their damaged cars. Progress has been slow as the city continues to cite the owners for repairs that should have been made weeks ago.

WKYC went to Shoregate Towers' offices, but no one was there. Tenants like Wortman say this has gone on long enough.

"You can ask everybody there," he said. "[Getachew]'s in the wrong."
