BEACHWOOD, Ohio -- He was the namesake for Ohio’s Michael Louis Palumbo Jr. Act, which provided presumptive workers compensation for fire fighters diagnosed with occupational cancers.
Palumbo, shown on the right in the picture above, was fighting for his own life while he was fighting for the lives of other firefighters.
The Ohio Association of Professional Fire Fighters released a statement early Wednesday evening:
"It is with a heavy heart that the Ohio Association of Professional Fire Fighters reports the passing of Beachwood Fire Captain Michael Palumbo. Captain Palumbo passed away after a long battle with occupational brain cancer.
Mike was the namesake of Ohio’s Michael Louis Palumbo Jr. Act, which provided presumptive workers compensation for firefighters diagnosed with occupational cancers.
Mike was a captain with the Beachwood Fire Department and a member of Local 2388 since 1992. He leaves behind his wife of 23 years and 5 children, ranging in age from 8 to 21.
Mike was proud to be a firefighter. It was his life-long dream. He spent the majority of his career at the Beachwood Fire Department. Before joining Beachwood, he worked at the Willowwick Fire Department, serving the city where he was raised. At Beachwood, Mike was a member of the honor guard, a SWAT medic, and part of the HazMat Team.
