Data breach at Lakeland Community College: Names, social security numbers compromised

The incident happened between March 7-31, a letter from the school said.

KIRTLAND, Ohio — The personal information of students and staff at Lakeland Community College has been compromised, the school said in a letter last week.

"We are writing with important information regarding a recent security incident. The privacy and security of the personal information we maintain is of the upmost importance at Lakeland Community College. We wanted to provide you with information about the incident, explain the steps you should take to protect yourself, and let you know that we continue to take significant measures to protect your information," the letter said.

It went on to explain that the school had discovered unauthorized access to its network between March 7-31, 2023, and that some names and social security numbers had been compromised.

This is the letter sent home to students and staff affected by a data breach.

The school said an investigation was launched "immediately," using outside cybersecurity professionals. It wrapped up on Aug. 20.

"To date, we are not aware of any reports of identify fraud or improper use of your information as a direct result of this incident," Lakeland said in the letter.

However, school officials did encourage those affected to take extra precautionary steps to protect their finances and personal information. A document with resources and tips was included with the letter.

"Please accept our apologies that this incident occurred. We are committed to maintaining the privacy of personal information in our possession and have taken many precautions to safeguard it. We continually evaluate and modify our practices and internal controls to enhance the security and privacy of your personal information," the letter concluded.
