EASTLAKE, Ohio — An Eastlake police cruiser that was blocking a portion of state Route 2 was struck and badly mangled Monday morning while officers were assisting at the scene of an accident, the Eastlake Police Department said in a Facebook post.
The department said that "both officers were able to jump over the concrete median" and nobody involved in the incident was injured.
The Eastlake Police Department also released photos of the cruiser in their Facebook post (see below) showing the vehicle's trunk and rear windows smashed in.
3News reached out the the Eastlake Police Department for more details on the incident and have not yet received a response.
The incident comes as law enforcement agencies across Ohio are urging motorists to pay attention and drive carefully around emergency vehicles stopped on roadways. In July, the Ohio State Highway Patrol was one of six law enforcement agencies participating in a week-long campaign dedicated to education and enforcement of the "Move Over" law.
The Move Over law, a version of which is in effect in all 50 states, requires all drivers to move to an another lane when approaching any vehicle with flashing or rotating lights parked on the roadside.
Ohio troopers issued 440 of the nearly 1,000 total Move Over citations during the high-visibility enforcement week.
