CLEVELAND — Funeral arrangements have been announced for Lance Corporal Austin Schwenk, the Lake County Marine who was fatally shot at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina earlier this month.
The body of Schwenk will be flown home to Northeast Ohio on Tuesday, October 31 with arrival at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport scheduled for approximately 5:10 p.m. A procession, featuring first responders, will take Schewenk to the Brunner Sanden Deitrick Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Mentor.
A public visitation for Austin Schwenk will be held at the Brunner Sanden Deitrick Funeral Home & Cremation Center at 8466 Mentor Avenue in Mentor on Friday, Nov. 3 from 3 p.m.-8 p.m.
The funeral will be held on Saturday, Nov. 4 at the Riverside High School Field House in Painesville starting at 10 a.m.
Schwenk was killed on October 18 in an incident in a barracks room on the base, according to officials. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 2022 after graduating from Riverside High School and belonged to the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division.
"Law enforcement authorities have apprehended a Marine suspected of involvement in the death, the 2nd Marine Division told 3News earlier this week. "The incident is currently under investigation by NCIS. We will continue to assist the investigating agency to the fullest extent possible. Our deepest condolences go out to the Marine’s family and friends at this time."
The Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) told 3News in a statement that it will be "conducting a thorough investigation into the shooting death" of Schwenk.
"We are deeply saddened to hear about the tragic loss of Lance Cpl. Austin Schwenk," Riverside Local Schools told 3News in a statement. "Austin was a 2022 Riverside High School graduate who was serving in the military. He was a tremendous young man and will be greatly missed by so many. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Austin’s family and friends."
