KIRTLAND, Ohio — As high school sports across Northeast Ohio get underway, several districts continue to learn of positive COVID-19 tests among their players and staff.
On Thursday, Kirtland local schools announced, in a letter to the community, that a coach on the high school's volleyball team has contracted the coronavirus.
The coach's diagnosis comes on the heels of superintendent Chad VanAmhem suspending team action after the athletes were exposed to COVID-19 during a scrimmage against Mayfield High School over the weekend. Mayfield had three athletes test positive.
Earlier this week, VanAmhem also announced that a varsity player who is also in the band was exhibiting symptoms. It's unknown at this time if her test yielded a positive or negative result.
The letter advises both the varsity and junior varsity teams to continue their quarantine and monitor themselves for symptoms.
