EASTLAKE, Ohio — The warm weather may have you thinking about Spring cleaning.
If you are planning to sell on eBay, there are changes you should know about.
“Now the new year has come, we’re doing the taxing,” said Danny Williams, who runs an eBay store called “Nook N Cranny” out of his home in Eastlake.
For 20 years, he has followed the company’s trends and changes.
He says you must now enter a sales tax amount, which is is 8% in Ohio, when you list.
If your item is bought in Minnesota, Washington, Iowa, Connecticut, New Jersey, Alabama, Oklahoma, or Pennsylvania, your buyer would then pay that tax.
If your buyer is not in one of those 8 states, Williams says they would not be charged.
You would also need an Ohio’s vendor’s license, which is $25.00, to file the tax. Failure to do so could result in a fine.
“But also, eBay can flag you and permanently kick you off,” Williams added.
Amazon Marketplace already handles sales taxes in those states, and later this year, Williams believes eBay will too.
It is all the result of a Supreme Court ruling last year that gave Uncle Sam strength in the burgeoning online marketplace.
