For Lake County Judge Michael Cicconetti, justice is best served unconventionally.
Judge Cicconetti has become a viral sensation for his unique method of sentencing. Like having a woman get sprayed in the face by what she thought was going to be pepper spray, or giving 18-year-old Victoria Bascom the choice between 30 days in jail or walking 30 miles after she didn't pay a cab driver for a 30-mile trip.
"We've had thousands of cases where we haven't had that opportunity, until this case here.” says Cicconetti.
18-year old Nicholas Hasenauer and his friend were strolling through Painesville Township Park when they took one of the life saver rings from the pier.
What they didn't know was they were caught on surveillance the whole time.
“I was going to have Ranger Smallwood over here take your butt down to the pier and drop you in the water, then look for a life saver.” Said Cicconetti.
Hasenauer had the choice to do 60 days in jail or to teach a class about how to save a life with Red Cross.
"I'm sorry," Hasenauer told the judge. "And after you saying that, it really puts it into perspective in my head.
Needless to say, Hasenauer apologized for his actions and will be teaching a safety class this summer.
