The 17-year-old died at the scene from gunshot wounds. A 23-year-old suspect from Painesville was detained hours later in Indiana.

CLEVELAND — A 17-year-old boy from Madison was fatally shot in a Willoughby alleyway early Saturday morning, with police tracking down a suspect in Indiana hours later, Willoughby's police chief said.

According to Chief of Police James Schultz, officers were called to the alleyway adjacent to a restaurant at 4066 Erie Street at around 12:30 a.m. for a reported shooting. A witness told police they heard a gunshot from across the street and saw a victim lying on the ground, with a man allegedly running west away from the scene.

The 17-year-old, from Madison, was found near the back of the alley. Officers and paramedics rendered first aid but the teen was determined to have died at the scene.

Detectives investigated and pinned a 23-year-old Painesville man as a suspect. Police say the 23-year-old was discovered to be traveling on I-90 and I-80 in Indiana at around 10 a.m. Indiana State Police officers helped track down the suspect's car and arrested the man.

Detectives are still looking into the cause of the incident. Investigators are unclear as to the nature of the relationship between the suspect and the victim. Police believe there were no other individuals involved in the alleged shooting.

The Ohio BCI and Lake County Prosecutor's Office responded to the scene.

Anyone who witnessed the alleged shooting is asked to call Willoughby PD's Detective Bureau at 440-953-4210.
