According to a release, the Madison Township Police Department received a call on Monday, March 14 from a mental health counselor regarding a 54-year-old woman who had contacted the counselor's agency wanting to shoot herself. After responding to the woman's home, officers learned that she had left the residence in her vehicle.
With the help of her family members, officers were able to trace the woman's vehicle to a location in North Perry Village using GPS. After officers arrived in the area, the vehicle began to move, with a Madison Township officer initiating a stop on McMackin Rd. near U.S. 20.
An officer who approached the vehicle observed a handgun and a knife on the front seat next to the driver. The woman refused to acknowledge the presence of the officer and continued to remain in the vehicle with her doors locked and the windows up.
Other officers responded to the scene with tire deflation spikes being placed around the vehicle to prevent her from driving away.
After failing to get the woman to engage via various Crisis Intervention Techniques over a 30-40-minute period, officers proceeded to temporarily immobilize the woman by the deployment of a Taser through the car's sunroof, which was partially open. Officers positioned cruisers to block off the area from motorists.
Two officers were able to enter the vehicle using a second car key fob that they obtained and extricate and secure the female. The weapons were also secured while she was immobilized.
The woman was taken into custody without any apparent injuries and transported to TriPoint Medical Center by the Madison Fire District for psychological evaluation and assistance. In addition to the Madison Township Police Department, officers from the North Perry Police Department, Perry Village Police Department and Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded to assist to the scene.
