MENTOR, Ohio — A man was taken to a Lake County hospital after escaping a Mentor house fire
Just after midnight on Wednesday morning, Mentor fire crews responded to a house fire on the 8100 block of Clifton Court. The fire was originally reported as a "yard grass fire" close to a house.
When crews arrived to the scene, the split-level home had caught fire toward the back of the structure. Firefighters quickly determined that everyone was out of the building before attempting to put out the fire.
A 31-year-old man was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
After the fire was contained, an initial investigation determined that the smoke detectors were working inside the residence, however dogs inside of the house alerted the residents before the smoke detectors went off. The Mentor Fire Department also say a cat was rescued from the house during fire.
The Mentor Fire Investigation Unit said the house suffered "significant damage" as a result of the incident. An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
