2 hurt in Mentor crash that closed portion of Route 2 for 7 hours

Mentor police say the crash happened when a Jeep Liberty was rear-ended by a BMW 540 'at a very high rate of speed.'

MENTOR, Ohio — Two men were hurt in an overnight crash that left a portion of state Route 2 closed in Mentor for approximately seven hours Friday morning.

Mentor police say it was around 1:12 a.m. when officers responded to the scene of the two-car accident on Route 2 East near state Route 306.

That’s where a 21-year-old Mentor man was driving a 2009 Jeep Liberty in the center lane when police say he was rear-ended by a 2019 BMW 540 that was traveling “at a very high rate of speed” by a 35-year-old Kirtland man.

The driver of the BMW was ejected from the vehicle and taken by Life Flight to MetroHealth Medical Center, police said. The driver of the Jeep was taken to Hillcrest Hospital with serious injuries.

“It is unknown if alcohol was a factor and the crash remains under investigation,” according to the Mentor Police Department.

No additional information was released.
