MIAMI — A 33-year-old man wanted in Northeast Ohio for a 2016 boating incident that killed a local fisherman was arrested by the U.S. Marshals in Miami, Florida.
Alen Gorishti was arrested on Sunday, Jan. 14, after being wanted by the U.S. Coast Guard in Ohio for a deadly boating crash that happened in Fairport Harbor on Nov. 6, 2016.
The crash happened when Gorishti allegedly collided with another boat that was anchored approximately two miles off the coast of Fairport Harbor. The collision resulted in two men being sent into the waters of Lake Erie.
The USCG Station in Fairport Harbor recovered one survivor, but the search for the missing man was suspended the following day. The body of Roger Burton was later located and recovered on Jan. 14, 2017.
The U.S. Coast Guard charged Gorishti on Nov. 3, 2021, with seaman’s manslaughter and false statements in federal court in the Northern District of Ohio.
Eventually, the U.S. Marshals located Gorishiti living in Canada and found that he had recently traveled to Colombia. During Gorishti’s return flight from Colombia, he stopped in Miami, where he was arrested.
“Outstanding cooperation between the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Marshals Service and law enforcement in Canada and Colombia resulted in the long-awaited arrest of this suspect. Law enforcement hopes this arrest brings some justice to the victim’s family,” said U.S. Marshal Pete Elliot.
Gorishti is currently being held in southern Florida until he can be extradited to Northeast Ohio.
