LAKE COUNTY, Ohio — The Willoughby-Eastlake Board of Education has decided to close all of its school buildings and suspend extracurricular activities after several students and teachers were exposed to COVID-19.
The news was announced in a letter sent out to parents, teachers and staff members Saturday afternoon. The decision comes after the district learned of exposures at Longfellow Elementary School and Jefferson Elementary School.
"With any exposure, the district works closely with the Lake County General Health District. Through this work, close contacts of the infected persons have been identified. If you or your child have been identified as a close contact, you will be receiving a phone call from the health department during the next 24 to 48 hours," said Superintendent Steve Thompson.
All of the district's school buildings will be closed beginning Monday, October 12 until further notice and all of the district's students will transition to virtual learning.
Additionally, all extracurricular activities will be suspended immediately until reopening guidelines are reviewed for those activities.
More information is expected from the Board as reopening procedures are evaluated.
