Willoughby Hills council members 'fired' by mayor say, 'Not so fast'

The battle between the mayor of Willoughby Hills and fired city council members has turned into a soap opera.

Elected by the people or appointed as replacements, 6 of the 7 Willoughby Hills city council members' pictures have been taken down at city hall.

The keys they have no longer work because the locks have been changed.

But the resolve of their mayor has not.

Robert Weger is still standing his ground in this latest episode of As The World Turns in the city of Willoughby Hills.

Which takes us to Thursday's city council zoning commission meeting.

Linda Fulton is here. Again.

She's lived in Willoughby Hills for more than 60 years and actually likes sitting in on admittedly boring council committee meetings.

"You learn what is going on in the city", Fulton said.

But even she is stumped about just what is going on at city hall these days.

Mayor Weger was flying with fill-in wingman Chris Hallam at the planning and zoning commission meeting. That's because Hallam is the only councilman to make Mayor Weger's cut.

On Wednesday, Weger fired the other six for gross misconduct and for words maybe none of them can spell or define without a dictionary.

Charges Like malfeasance and misfeasance.

"It's a temper tantrum," says Councilwoman Laura Pizmoht. "It's his way or the highway. We do what he wants or he throws a fit."

Pizmoht is one of the 6 who the mayor believes he has fired, or in his words, "let go."

"I don't have temper tantrums. It just had to be done because they violated the law," said Weger.

Pizmoht doesn't see it that way at all and fired off an email to the mayor who thinks he fired her.

"Surely the Willoughby Hills city charter did not intend for the mayor of Willoughby Hills to be a tyrant," Pizmoht wrote.

"She has no clue what she's talking about," is the mayor's response.

But Pizmoht is digging in, saying, "What he is doing is fundamentally wrong."

So what, if anything, should the good people like Linda Fulton be concerned about as the Willoughby Hills world turns?

Nothing, according to Mayor Weger.

"Nothing is going to change. Checks are going to be paid. The service will continue as they have in the past, so they should not notice anything," said Weger.

When asked if that sort of begs the question, "is a whole council even needed anyway, Weger responded "correct," but added that council members "pass the laws", he "enforces them" as mayor and safety director.

His plan is to fill the 6 empty seats in 30 days.

"We put an ad in the paper for resumes. It's going to be fine", Weger said.

"Sure! Every dictator thinks everything is going to be fine under their rule but that's not how it works," said Pizmoht. "Someone needs to fight this fight for our people and the voters who voted for this majority on council."

"These people committed crimes and were found guilty on multiple occasions," Weger says with complete conviction on the charges involving gross misconduct.

"He's a little unstable. I think that's pretty clear," Pizmoht says emphatically.

Still, Weger tells Channel 3 News is was absolutely not a case of him not getting his way.

"Right. I don't run that way," Weger said.

Linda Fulton, livid and fed up, doesn't see it that way when she says, "Mayor, get off your high horse. Do what's right".

The next scheduled city council meeting is October 12.

Pizmoht says she and her fellow council members will be there and hold their meeting in the parking lot if they have to.
