We continued Season 2 Wednesday with Sarah Horbol, the women's winner of the 2018 Cleveland Marathon. The Westlake native has also qualified for the 2020 Olympic Trials.
You can watch the full interview again below:
Horbol ran her first marathon in 2014 in Cleveland. Running wasn't new to her, as she was a sprinter in high school, but distance running took some training.
Horbol placed third overall in the women's category of the 2017 Cleveland Marathon, which put her in the mindset of finishing in under three hours again the following year.
She says she didn't plan on winning it all in 2018.
"I felt good, I didn't know I was going to feel that good, though," she recalled.
Horbol finished with a 2:51 race time, which exceeded her expectations. Still, she needed to shave off another six minutes to compete at the Olympic qualifiers.
Horbol headed to St. Paul last October for the Twin Cities Marathon, where she recorded a 2:42:58 time. Now, she's got her sights set on the Olympic qualifiers in Atlanta, where she'll need to finish within 2:29:30 and place within the top three to advance to Tokyo. She doesn't, however, plan to reach Tokyo. Instead, she's focused on recording her best personal time.
"That would be incredible," she said of advancing to the 2020 Olympics. "I just know where I stand right now, I'm being realistic, and I hope I have my best time."
