Man dead after fire at Elyria house

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

ELYRIA, Ohio — One man died and another was taken to the hospital following a house fire in Elyria on Sunday morning.

Elyria Fire Chief Joe Pronesti told 3News that fire officials received the call a little after 8 a.m. for a house fire in the 200 block of Gates Avenue. 

Upon arriving at the scene and doing a search, firefighters found one man deceased on the second floor and rescued another man on the first floor. The deceased man has since been identified as 42-year-old Jeremiah Ready.

The rescued man was taken to University Hospitals in Elyria by LifeCare for non-severe injuries. 

According to fire officials, the house is a total loss, and the cause of the fire is under investigation at this time. 

Elyria Township, Sheffield Village and Lorain all assisted at the scene.
