Elyria police say the accident happened on Thursday at around 3:44 a.m. near the intersection of West River Road and David Drive. Upon arriving at the scene, officials determined that the driver of the vehicle sustained fatal injuries from the accident.

A preliminary investigation believes that the 2016 Jeep Cherokee was traveling northbound on West River Road and traveled off the east side of the road, striking a utility pole, which caused a power outage in the immediate area.

No other passengers were in the vehicle at the time of the accident.

The driver has since been identified as 38-year-old Jeffrey Cannon Jr. of Elyria.

The Elyria Police Department was assisted by Lifecare, the Elyria Fire Department and the Lorain County Coroner's Office.
