A 14-year-old girl is in police custody after bringing a gun to school on Thursday, April 29.

A teacher at Pathways to Success Educational Service Center notified the school's Program Director that one of its students had brought a gun to school.

According to reports, on Wednesday, two teachers were having a conversation with the student about money, guns and other topics when the student mentioned she owed a male student money over a bet. The student went on to disclose to the teacher that the male student no longer wanted money to settle the bet, but wanted a handgun instead.

The reporting teacher advised the girl that providing a handgun to another student would be a "bad idea" and explained the potential consequences of such actions, especially on school grounds.

On Thursday, the teacher noticed that the girl was wearing a jacket and carrying a purse, which was not typical behavior for the student. The student also avoided being checked for contraband while entering the school that morning.

The teacher reported the suspicious behavior and the Program Director who went to the student's classroom and retrieved a loaded handgun from the student's purse. The gun was loaded with a 15-round magazine and an additional magazine was found in the holster.

The student admitted to having the gun and that she had taken it from her father. She told officials she brought the gun to "impress" the male student.

The student did not make any threats to harm herself or anyone else during the incident so the school was not placed on lock down.

The student was transported to the Lorain County Detention Home and is awaiting a hearing. She has been charged with illegal conveyance or possession of a deadly weapon or dangerous ordnance in a school safety zone, a felony of the fifth degree.

The incident remains under investigation and officials are working to speak with the male student.
