CLEVELAND — Two youths were arrested near the area of a Lorain elementary school after school employees saw them with handguns, Lorain police said Thursday.

According to Capt. Jacob A. Morris of the Lorain Police Department, the "juvenile" boys were arrested in a backyard just south of Frank Jacinto Elementary School and charged with "multiple offenses, including weapons charges." The police department did not release the suspects' ages.

Police said the two suspects were initially approached by school staff members outside of Lorain High School, about half a mile away from the elementary school. The staff members suspected the youths may have been carrying guns and notified school resource officers. The suspects then allegedly ran toward the elementary school.

According to police, a Jacinto Elementary School staffer reported seeing the youths throw their guns over a nearby fence before they were taken into custody.

Both Lorain High School and Jacinto Elementary School were under short lockdowns for "precautionary reasons" while police worked to secure the scene.

"The Lorain Police Department commends the Lorain City Schools staff members for their commitment to the safety and security of all who attend, visit, and work in our schools," the police department said.
