ELYRIA, Ohio — A Thursday afternoon fire in Elyria has left five pets dead and a home badly damaged.
Firefighters were called to the house on the 200 block of Roosevelt Avenue around 3:45 p.m. Chief Joseph Pronesti says the blaze was contained to only the kitchen, but the intensity of the smoke and flames still affected the entire building.
While no persons were inside the home at the time of the fire, a search found several pets had already perished. However, crews were able to pull out one dog and revive it with oxygen before transporting it to a local animal hospital.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. According to Pronesti, the incident caused roughly $30,000 worth of damage, including $20,000 to the house structure itself.
