LORAIN, Ohio -- The source of a gas leak that has kept a Lorain elementary school closed for more than a month has finally been located.
Admiral King Elementary School on Washington Avenue closed Sept. 30 and students were sent to three other elementary schools.
The source was discovered Thursday afternoon when it was discovered there was an old uncapped gas well underneath the gymnasium floor, according to a news release from Superintendent Tom Tucker.
The well was located five feet below the floor at the top of the key near the three-point line in the northeast corner of the gym.
After drilling holes through the gym floor to detect the gas, a backhoe was brought in to excavate the floor.
A meeting will be held Friday to determine the next steps.
For the short term, the well will be vented to the outside. Long-term plans include capping and sealing the well and determining the steps needed to assure a safe return to the building.
Portions of the gym will be removed to accommodate the heavy equipment.
Admiral King will remain closed until further determination of the situation.
"We are much better off today than we have been all month," Tucker said.
