ELYRIA, Ohio — Another staple of Elyria's Midway Mall is set to close.
On Monday, Best Buy confirmed via email to 3News that it will not be renewing its lease. According to the Elyria Chroncle-Telegram, the store will officially close on March 7.
"We have made the decision not to renew the lease of our Midway Mall location in Elyria. Our customers have shown they would prefer to shop at our renovated Avon location, especially as the Midway Mall area has evolved," Best Buy spokesperson Claire Larson told 3News.
Over the past few years, many anchor stores at mall have closed their doors. Macy's left in 2016, Sears closed in 2017, and JCPenney closed in 2019. Dunham’s Sports and Johnny K’s Power Sports are among the stores that remain open at the 1.1 million-square-foot regional mall.
New Elyria mayor Frank Whitfield told 3News last month that he looks forward to working with investors to attract something to the decaying Midway Mall that will bring people to the city.
“That might not be the best place for retail anymore but logistically it’s a gold mine, it’s right there on I-80 and I-90,” he explains. “It has the perfect logistical set up to be able to bring massive amounts of people to our city.”
