Child rescued, airlifted to hospital after falling 15 feet at Cascade Park in Elyria

The child was flown to a hospital by Cleveland Metro Life Flight. Though she suffered severe injuries, officials say she is expected to recover.

CLEVELAND — First responders in Elyria rescued a girl who was seriously injured after she fell approximately 15 feet onto a "precarious spot" in Cascade Park, fire officials said.

According to a social media post signed by Elyria Fire Chief Joseph Pronesti, firefighters and police were called to the park at around 3 p.m. and found a "young child" who had fallen between a pile of large rocks and the Black River under the Lake Avenue Bridge.

Crews were able to extricate the child and stabilize her injuries and Cleveland Metro Life Flight was called to airlift the child to a hospital "due to the length of the extrication and extent of injuries," Pronesti said.

"Crews from Lorain County Metro Parks Rangers, Lifecare, Elyria Fire, under the Command of Captain Mark Slack and Elyria Police did an exceptional job working together and safely extricating her which took roughly 40 minutes," Pronesti said. "All should be commended for a job well done."
