CLEVELAND — A precautionary advisory for Elyria residents to boil their water has been rescinded and water can now be used for all purposes, city officials announced Saturday.
The advisory was put into place on Thursday night after a power outage at the Elyria Water Plant caused a temporary reduction in water pressure. Elyria's Safety Service Director, Chris Pyanowski, said in a news release that crews "immediately implemented contingency plans and worked through the night to successfully restore power and water pressure."
The boil advisory was put into place per federal regulations until tests were run to ensure the water was not contaminated. Pyanowski said those tests confirmed there was no contamination at any point during the power outage.
Residents in Elyria and nearby Amherst were temporarily asked to curtail non-essential water usage on Thursday night. That order was lifted in Elyria Friday but remained in effect in Amherst.
Residents who have not run their tap for several hours are advised to run the water for one minute before use to flush any stale water.
The Elyria Water Pumping Plant is located in Lorain and services Elyria, Amherst and North Ridgeville as well as other Northeast Ohio townships.
