An Elyria man is currently in custody after being indicted on multiple counts of rape against children.
A Lorain County grand jury this week charged Eugene Arroyo, 61, with five counts of rape and two counts of gross sexual imposition. Police arrested Arroyo on Wednesday and he appeared in court Thursday, where during arraignment a judge issued a $100,000 bond.
According to the indictment, Arroyo's alleged crimes took place between December of 2022 and June of this year. While the number of alleged victims has not been specified, all of the accusations involve children under the age of 13, with prosecutors claiming Arroyo "purposefully compelled the victim to submit by force or threat of force" before sexually assaulting them.
Arroyo is married to LeighAnn Arroyo, a community activist who ran for Elyria City Council as recently as 2023. The family has not publicly commented on the allegations.
Arroyo's next court date has not been set.
