On Sunday at 2:34 a.m. an Elyria Police Officer saw a vehicle with erratic behavior near South Abbe Road and East Broad Street. Upon checking the surrounding area, a red Dodge vehicle was located in the parking lot of Speedway.

Police say that the driver of the Dodge began to flee from the officer while the officer was partially inside the vehicle.

Moments after fleeing, the vehicle crashed into the residence of 39009 Chestnut Ridge Road. The driver was then located and barricaded himself at 520 Carol Lane.

Officers attempted to get the suspect out of the residence, but he eventually got into another vehicle parked inside of the garage at the home.

"The driver/suspect began to accelerate and drove through the garage door of the residence at officers, who had surrounded the house," said Elyria Police Chief William Pelko in a press release.

Elyria police officials say that officers then fired their firearms at the suspect and took him into custody.

The suspect was taken into custody and was transported to University Hospital Elyria Medical Center with an apparent gunshot wound. He was eventually cleared medically and taken to the Lorain County Sheriff's Office.

You can watch dash camera video of both incidents below; the clip does not show officers firing their weapons:

The suspect, 27-year-old Dorian Williams of Detroit, Michigan, has been charged with the following:

  • Two counts of assault on a police officer
  • Two counts of failure to comply
  • One count of having weapons under disability
  • One count of obstructing official business
  • One misdemeanor count for resisting arrest

Bond for Williams was set at $300,000 for the felony charges, plus an additional $750 for the misdemeanor charge during his arraignment in Elyria Municipal Court. He is due back for a preliminary hearing on November 14.

Police say that the officer who was dragged from the vehicle at East Broad Street and South Abbe Road was taken to University Hospital Elyria Medical Center for minor injuries to his knee and arm. The officer has since been released.

All of the officers who fired their duty weapons will be placed on paid administrative leave until further notice.

Anyone with information on these incidents is asked to contact Lorain Police Department Captain Mike Failing at 440-204-2105.

The Elyria Police Department was assisted by the North Ridgeville Police Department, Grafton Police Department, Lorain Police Department, Lorain County Sheriff's Office and the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
