Lawsuit filed over teen who OD'd on caffeine powder

Logan Stiner, a high school senior from LaGrange, was just 18 years old when he died from a pure powder caffeine overdose in May 2014.

His parents, Kate and Dennis Stiner, planned his funeral instead of watching Logan graduate five days later.

Now they're filing a wrongful death lawsuit against companies including Amazon and Hard Rhino. They believe manufacturers and distributors broke Ohio Food and Drug safety laws.

"This is pharmaceutical-grade caffeine powder that is advertised, marketed and delivered across the country, and just a small difference in dosage is the difference between life and death, and we clearly believe they violated several of the Ohio safety laws," attorney Brian Balser said.

The Stiners and Balser say taking caffeine powder is like "playing Russian roulette" and call it "unreasonably dangerous."

An autopsy showed the deadly overdose of powdered caffeine in Stiner's system was 23 times the normal amount.

Just one teaspoon is equivalent to 25 cups of coffee.

Caffeine powder has been gaining popularity for boosting athletic performance, but the Stiner family has also been working hard to get the FDA to ban it

They now have more than 6,000 signatures on a petition at www.loganstiner.org.
