A Lorain County Metro Park Ranger attempted to make contact with the individual in the vehicle. The male subject then allegedly pointed a handgun at the ranger, who then called for additional help.

"Additional units arrived and immediately began blocking off streets and the park to stop vehicle and pedestrian traffic from entering the area," said the Lorain County Sheriff's Office in a release.

Officials say that the incident was then handled as a barricaded suspect situation and the Lorain County SWAT and SWAT Negotiators responded to the scene.

Negotiations with the individual continued for hours before the subject pointed and fired a handgun at SWAT officers. Lorain County Sheriff's officials say that an officer-involved shooting then occurred.

SWAT medics and EMS who were already on the scene attempted lifesaving measures. The male was pronounced dead on the scene. Elyria police later identified him as 59-year-old Brian Dawson of Elyria.

No officers or bystanders were injured during the standoff according to the Lorain County Sheriff's Office.
