LORAIN, Ohio — The traditional Lorain County Fair won’t be happening this summer due to ongoing concerns with the coronavirus pandemic. Instead, the Fair Board has decided to host a Junior Fair this year instead.
“Tonight a majority of the Senior Fair Board voted to hold a Junior Fair only,” the Lorain County Fair posted on their Facebook page Monday night. “We will be in touch with all our concessions, vendors, and exhibitors in the next couple weeks about refunds.”
Additional details on the Junior Fair have not yet been announced.
The decision comes just days after Wellington Mayor Hans Schneider sent a letter asking the Lorain County Fair Board to cancel the event, which brings thousands of people to his community.
"It's simply not worth it this year. ... Are you willing to gamble that a member of your family, a friend or a member of your community won’t contract and/or die from Covid-19 as a result of holding the fair?" he wrote.
The Lorain County Fair was scheduled for Aug. 23-30. It would have marked the event's 175th celebration.
Cuyahoga County also postponed their annual fair until August 2021. The Ohio State Fair canceled their event earlier this year.
