The Lorain County Sheriff’s Office is warning Northeast Ohioans of a scam in which a caller pretends to be an employee of the Lorain County Sheriff's Department, and states that the victim has an outstanding warrant due to missing jury duty.
The law enforcement agency says that the caller tells the victim that they have missed jury duty and there is now a warrant out for them. After the victim confirms information with the caller, the victim is told to purchase and forward gift cards to clear up the warrant.
The caller then tells the victim that they will be reimbursed after they show up to court and pay their bond with the gift cards.
"We want to remind the public that no Law Enforcement Agency will call and solicit funds to clear up warrants. Should you receive a call do not release personal information, hang up, call your local Law Enforcement jurisdiction, and try to verify the information."
The Sheriff's Department also says that anyone who may have fallen victim to this scam should reach out to the local law enforcement in the jurisdiction in which they reside.
