CLEVELAND — A man is in custody on murder and other charges after a woman was shot and killed in the city of Lorain on Tuesday evening, police said.
Lorain resident Dale Cantu has been charged with murder as well as additional weapons and obstructing charges in connection with the shooting death of Lupita Rivera-Lopez. Lorain police responded to several calls reporting shots fired in the area of East 31st Street and Pearl Avenue during the "late evening hours" of Tuesday.
Officers found Rivera-Lopez with multiple gunshot wounds being given first aid by bystanders near the road. Afrer police attempted life saving measures and requested EMS, Rivera-Lopez was later pronounced dead at Lorain Mercy Hospital.
Officers were alerted that the suspect's car was seen about two miles away from the scene of the shooting, and Cantu was arrested following a brief foot chase after officers discovered him fleeing from the suspect vehicle with a handgun. Police recovered the handgun on the ground near where Cantu was arrested.
"Thanks to immense public support and action, the Lorain Police Department was able to quickly arrest the involved party before any additional injuries were caused," the department said in a news release. "Our thoughts and condolences are offered to the friends and family of the victim."
Cantu is in custody at the Lorain County Jail.
Lorain police detectives are continuing to investigate the alleged shooting but are not pursuing any other suspects.
Anyone with any additional information on the case is asked to call the Lorain Police Department Detective Bureau at (440) 204-2105.
