LORAIN COUNTY, Ohio — The Ohio State Highway Patrol confirms a Lorain man is dead after his motorcycle crashed into the side of a car Wednesday afternoon in Sheffield Township.
Officials say a Mazda 3 had stopped at a Mayfield Street stop sign before proceeding west across state Route 57. As this ocurred, a Yamaha 850 MTN motorcycle came from the south on Route 57 and slammed into the driver's side of the vehicle.
The driver of the motorcycle, 23-year-old Javier Alvarez, died at the scene despite wearing a safety helmet. Both occupants of the Mazda — a 17-year-old girl who was driving along with a 21-year-old male passenger — were taken by ambulance to UH Elyria Medical Center with minor injuries.
Members of the Lorain Police Department, Lorain County Sheriff's Office, and Sheffield Township Fire Department assisted state troopers in the aftermath of the crash. The exact cause of the incident remains under investigation.
