ELYRIA, Ohio — The city of Elyria wants to hear from voices of their own community regarding experiences with racism.

It’s the focus of a forum with the mayor, YWCA and Lorain County Urban League for Time of Listening.

“Time of Listening is focused on providing residents of color a safe space and opportunity to share their experiences with racism in our community with city officials and other leaders in the hopes of identifying patterns and having the opportunity to address and create actionable solutions,” the event’s description declares.

City officials say anybody who can’t attend but wants to participate can share their stories by sending an e-mail to Ren Flanders at rflanders@cityofelyria.org.

“Counselors and local clergy will be available on site for any resident who needs support throughout this experience,” officials said.

There will also be coronavirus safety precautions in place for the forum.

“In accordance with physical distancing guidelines and safety protocols, the event will be held outdoors. Attendees will be required to physically distance, and are encouraged to wear masks.”

The forum takes place from 6-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 2 at 131 Court Street.

It comes after a weekend filled with demonstrations and protests calling for justice after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
