WELLINGTON, Ohio — Following an officer-involved shooting on Saturday night, Wellington Police released a statement on Facebook.
The officers tried to use a Taser to subdue a man that approached officers with a weapon, but it did not work. One of the officers shot the man at the scene, and he was airlifted to the MetroHealth Medical Center.
The Wellington Police Department updated the public on the condition of the man, stating he is in stable condition.
"Update on the Officer involved shooting last night. The male that was shot is in stable condition. The officers involved were not physically hurt during the incident, but these types of incidents can cause mental trauma for officers, dispatchers and the public that were present at the time of these incidents that are tense, uncertain and rapidly evolving. The Wellington Police Department is arranging for professional counseling for those who were at the scene. Mental wellbeing and mental illness are in focus as a result of this incident. This department just went through training to bring remote access through an MOU with Nord for those who are in crisis.
We are working to release the video of this incident as there have been numerous requests and because the public has a right to know about incidents involving our officers. When that video is available we will make sure that the public has access. Our prayers are with the male that was transported and his family.
