Massillon Police tried to pull over a 2004 Ford Taurus westbound on North Avenue near 10th Street just after 1 a.m. Saturday.

Instead of pulling over, the driver accelerated on North Avenue, lost control and traveled off the right side of the roadway, striking two utility poles.

The Taurus was being driven by Victoria Charmaine Provitt, 22, of Massillon and she received fatal injuries and was pronounced dead by the Stark County Coroner’s Office at Affinity Hospital. Police say Provitt was wearing her seatbelt.

Police say that Chine Marie Myricks, 22, also of Massillon, was a passenger in Provitt’s vehicle. Police say Myricks wasn’t wearing a seatbelt and sustained non-life threatening injuries. Myricks was also taken to Affinity Hospital.

Police and state troopers continue to investigate the crash and alcohol use is suspected in the crash.
